The Last Dance is the story of two young students, in this case, two boys, who despite being friends since childhood, are torn apart by their exposure to violent influences and anti-social behavior in their school environment. The 'code of conduct' takes a back seat to peer pressure and peer acceptance as we witness the disintegration of this friendship. The 'dance' refers to the most anticipated social event of the year; the prom, where the last of a growing series of confrontations between these two boys takes place. Choosing who to 'hang with' is no longer a matter of social maneuvering; it becomes an issue of life or death. The story deals directly with gang related issues, violence in the school system (weapons), the 'code of conduct', and how our "need to belong" can lead to alternative lifestyle choices.
"The main point of the play was to discourage teens from joining gangs or cliques. It was meant to teach us about the things that teenagers are faced with when friendships change."
Grade 7 Student David Lewis P.S.
"The show was realistic and easy to understand. The play brought out social issues that the students face and will face throughout their lives."
